Our client is a medium sized, rapidly expanding logistics company based in Nairobi Kenya and with operations in the port cities of Mombasa (Kenya) and Dar es Salaam (Tanzania). They have physical presence in Kampala (Uganda), Juba (South Sudan), Kigali (Rwanda) and Lusaka (Zambia). Through partners they have representation across most of Sub-Sahara Africa including West Africa – Ghana and Rwanda specializing in freight forwarding, customs brokerage, trucking, warehousing and distribution.

In Rwanda, they are the official Hellman Network Inc representatives, giving them a major competitive advantage especially in delivery of air and ocean freight solutions to and from anywhere in the world. They are now seeking to cement their presence in Rwanda by engaging a commercially oriented, well-seasoned logistics professional to manage our business development agenda across Rwanda, Burundi and Eastern DRC.

They are seeking an exceptional professional with a successful history in developing and deploying customer-centric logistics solutions, freight forwarding sales and operations to be based in Kigali.

They are looking for a dynamic and hands-on leader to develop and implement a robust business development and sales plan with focus on feeding our international freight forwarding agency network with business from Rwanda.

You will be self-motivated and comfortable with working under your own initiative but also able play your part in the team effort that is essential in ensuring that customers get the best possible service that is available.

Job Title:             BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Location:             Kigali, Rwanda                                  

Reports to:         Managing Director

Working Relationships

Internal: Directors, Functional Heads, and Country Managers

External: Customers, international freight forwarders, freight forwarding networks, regulators/Government, collaborators, and competitors.

Main Purpose of Job:

Reporting to the Director, the Business Development Manager will deliver new and repeat business and cross-sell all product lines to meet revenue and margin targets. The job holder will also ensure that the company retains and continues to grow its share of business from regular clients across Rwanda/Burundi/Eastern DRC.

Functions of the job:

Establish relationships with freight forwarders and shippers/exporters across Rwanda/ negotiate and generate direct business to our international freight forwarding network particularly in ocean and air freight services. Successful candidate should primarily be able to sell cargo services to importers in Rwanda on an FOB or Ex-Works basis;

Work and manage our appointed partners in Rwanda to deliver local/inland services including but not limited to customs clearance, transport and warehousing;

Establish and manage a sales team, set, agree and manage performance against agreed revenue and margin budgets;

Establish sales policies, procedures, selling and reporting guidelines to support the sales team in achieving the objectives set, in growing our market share and in increasing revenues;

Manage the sales cycle from the contacts stage to the post-closing stage for all sales; ensures all customer requirements are well understood and efficiently responded;

Provide weekly and monthly reports, data, and research and market intelligence to the directors, highlighting business performance, competitive landscape and recommendations;

Review and track progress against revenue and targets; analyze sales/ revenue reports; recommend and propose changes to existing plans and operating budgets; implement approved changes;

Maintain excellent client relationships, ensuring that the company grows its share of business from regular clients in Rwanda;

Work with Finance to ensure all payments are collected within the agreed timelines as per the credit terms of customers.

Education, experience and skills

Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in sales/marketing/supply chain/logistics solutions or equivalent relevant field

A minimum of 6 years within the logistics/freight forwarding space

A minimum of 5 years in Sales Management/Business Development with track record of success in managing a team with diverse cultural background

Solutions sales experience, gained in Rwanda

Sector specific experience – freight forwarding - in Rwanda

Personal Qualities         

Smart business person with ability to scan the environment for opportunities and mobilize resources to execute projects;

Ambitious and go-getter, capable of bringing on board beyond-the-usual business opportunities and executing these with a clear business mind;

Excellent communication skills, ability to connect with customers and key external stakeholders;

Exceptional knowledge and understanding of the local market will be necessary;

Demonstrate a proven track record of solid monthly revenue generation, be self-driven and have a clear focus on building strong relationships with clients whilst providing high quality customer service;

Integrity, credibility and standing, with an ingrained character to succeed in whatever situation;
